South Pelion Municipality files lawsuit against wind turbine spatial plan

The Municipality of South Pelion has filed a lawsuit with the Council of State against a Ministerial Decision regarding the Special Spatial Framework for Wind Turbines and Wind Farms. The municipality argues that the decision includes all its municipal units—Argalastis, Afetotes, Mileon, Shipiada, and Trikeri—within “Wind Energy Suitability Areas,” even those protected by the European Natura 2000 network.

Mayor Michalis Mitsikos stated that the decision disregards unanimous negative resolutions from the Municipal Council and the Municipal Committee. He called on the KEDE (Association of Local Authorities) to institutionally protect the decisions of local communities during the consultation process for environmental terms.

To discuss the implications of this framework on Pelion and other protected areas in Greece, the municipality will host a seminar on October 24, 2026, in Mileon. The event will feature speakers from the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the University of Thessaly, and various regional and European representatives to address scientific, legal, and tourism-related concerns.
