South Pelion renewable energy disputes

The Municipality of South Pelion is engaging in legal and administrative efforts to contest various renewable energy projects within its jurisdiction.

Initially, the municipality moved to take legal action regarding a photovoltaic station in the Zerovchia area of the Neochori community. Following a unanimous decision by the Municipal Committee, local authorities planned to file a criminal complaint against parties responsible for failing to comply with a judicial decision to remove and cease operations of the facility. The municipality also intended to file a lawsuit for damages and seek to reclaim economic benefits gained from the station’s operation.

Opposition has since expanded to wind energy. In September 2026, the Municipal Council scheduled a special session to discuss issuing a resolution against wind power stations to protect the region’s natural environment, productive landscape, and cultural character. Mayor Michalis Mitzikos emphasized the need for coordination among local representatives and collectives.

By October 2026, the municipality escalated its opposition by filing a lawsuit with the Council of State against a Ministerial Decision regarding the Special Spatial Framework for Wind Turbines and Wind Farms. The municipality argues that the decision classifies all its municipal units—Argalastis, Afetotes, Mileon, Shipiada, and Trikeri—as “Wind Energy Suitability Areas,” including zones protected by the European Natura 2000 network. Mayor Mitsikos stated the decision disregards unanimous negative resolutions from local authorities. To address these scientific, legal, and tourism-related concerns, the municipality organized an academic seminar in Milies for late October 2026, involving representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the University of Thessaly.
