South Pelion renewable energy disputes

The Municipality of South Pelion is engaging in legal and administrative efforts to contest various renewable energy projects within its jurisdiction.

Initially, the municipality moved to take legal action regarding a photovoltaic station in the Zerovchia area of the Neochori community. Following a unanimous decision by the Municipal Committee, local authorities planned to file a criminal complaint against parties responsible for failing to comply with a judicial decision to remove and cease operations of the facility. The municipality also intended to file a lawsuit for damages and seek to reclaim economic benefits gained from the station’s operation.

Subsequently, the municipal focus expanded to include opposition to wind energy. The Municipal Council scheduled sessions to discuss the installation of wind turbines and wind farms, with the goal of issuing a resolution opposing such projects to protect the region’s natural environment, productive landscape, and cultural character. Additionally, the municipality organized academic seminars to examine the implications of the new Special Spatial Plan for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) on the South Pelion area.
