United Nations agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), have warned that over 650,000 refugees and asylum seekers in South Sudan risk losing access to food aid within weeks due to severe funding shortages.

If new funding is not secured, the final food and nutrition distributions for the most vulnerable 240,000 refugees will cease after September. UNHCR officials stated that without a breakthrough, no refugees in the country will receive food assistance starting in October. This potential cutoff could force families to return to war-torn Sudan in search of sustenance.

South Sudan is currently facing a massive humanitarian crisis. More than 7.8 million people, representing over half the population, are experiencing acute food insecurity, and 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished. The country continues to receive approximately 3,000 refugees and returnees per week from neighboring Sudan.

The WFP faces an immediate $37 million funding gap for its refugee response, with a total shortfall of $258 million projected through the end of 2026. Current aid is already limited to half-rations for many families.
