South Tyrol electoral reform proposal sparks political dispute

A proposal to redraw the Bolzano–Überetsch–Unterland senatorial constituency in South Tyrol has sparked intense political debate. The amendment, introduced by Fratelli d’Italia MP Alessandro Urzì, seeks to move several predominantly German-speaking municipalities—including Tramin, Kurtatsch, Margreid, Kaltern, and Eppan—into the Meran constituency, while Aldein would be moved to the Brixen constituency.

Supporters of the move, such as Forza Italia coordinator Christian Bianchi, argue the change is necessary to ensure balanced representation and prevent the Italian-speaking linguistic group from losing direct representation in the Senate. Conversely, critics and opposition parties, including the Freiheitliche, Greens, and Süd-Tiroler Freiheit, view the proposal as a strategic attempt to alter majority voting patterns in favor of Italian-speaking or right-wing parties.

The debate has also pressured the SVP, which is considering using the controversy to advocate for broader electoral reforms, such as establishing a single electoral district for South Tyrol for both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate using pure proportional representation.
