Southampton murder of Henry Nowak fuels UK race and policing debate

Eighteen‑year‑old Henry Nowak was stabbed to death on a street in Southampton. Vickrum Digwa, a member of the local Sikh community, was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.

Nowak’s family is calling for a review of the sentence and for changes to legislation that currently exempts large Sikh ceremonial knives from weapons rules. The case has been seized upon by politicians, with the Reform Party, Nigel Farage and others using it to argue that policing is affected by concerns about race, while Labour leader Keir Starmer defended the police response. An inquest is scheduled for September next year to examine whether police actions or omissions contributed to the teenager’s death.
