Southampton student Henry Nowak's stabbing death sparks protests and political controversy

British police have charged six additional people with violent disorder following a protest in Southampton after the December stabbing death of 18‑year‑old university student Henry Nowak. Nowak was handcuffed by officers while he lay dying after being stabbed by 23‑year‑old Vickrum Digwa, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum 21‑year term. Protesters threw chairs, cans, rocks and flares; in total 11 people have been charged with disorder. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the street violence as "disgraceful and completely unacceptable" and rejected comments by U.S. Vice President JD Vance linking the incident to immigration.

The case has also fuelled a new strand of political rhetoric in the UK, with Reform UK and Nigel Farage alleging an "anti‑white prejudice" narrative. Commentators argue that the debate could sway white voters toward far‑right parties, while the government and mainstream parties stress a message of racial unity.
