Southeast Asian nations crack down on online gambling and cybercrime
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has announced that online gambling activities connected to physical casinos will be suspended starting in October 2026. The decision aims to combat technology-related fraud and money laundering, as authorities have found digital gambling channels increasingly difficult to monitor and control.
In addition to the suspension, Hun Manet ordered a review of casino licensing, noting that the country currently has over 100 licensed venues, which he described as too many. The suspension will remain in place until officials are satisfied that illegal money transfers and fraud are under control.
In a related regional effort against cybercrime, Laotian police have arrested more than 6,500 suspects since the beginning of 2026. The nationwide operation, led by the Ministry of Public Security, targeted illegal gambling and online scam networks through raids on hotels, rental homes, and special economic zones. The arrested individuals include citizens from China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.
