Southern California Wildfires Prompt Evacuations for Over 40,000 Residents

A series of large wildfires continue to blaze across Southern California, burning nearly 22,000 acres from Santa Barbara County to the U.S.-Mexico border. The most significant fires include the Sandy Fire in Ventura County, which forced more than 43,700 people into mandatory evacuations; the Bain Fire in Riverside County threatening homes in Jurupa Valley; the Verona Fire near Green Acres and Homeland; the Santa Rosa Island Fire on the Channel Islands; and the Tusil Fire in San Diego County. Combined, these blazes have prompted thousands of residents to flee, with only a handful of structures reported lost but several people suffering smoke inhalation and other injuries. Winds and warm temperatures have accelerated the spread, while containment ranges from 5% to 26% across the various fires, and officials continue to monitor conditions and allocate resources.
