Southern elephant seal born for the first time in Rio Grande do Sul

A southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) was born on October 7 at Cassino Beach in Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul. This event is considered extremely rare on the Brazilian coast.

According to the National Center for Environmental Education and Monitoring (Nema), this is the first documented birth of this species in the state and only the third recorded in Brazil. Environmental teams had been monitoring the female prior to the birth, which drew significant attention from local residents and visitors.

To ensure the tranquility of the animals and prevent interference during the pup's first days, professionals from Nema and the Marine Animal Recovery Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande (CRAM-FURG) have intensified monitoring and isolated the area. While these mammals occasionally appear on the Brazilian coast during migration, they typically breed in colonies near Antarctica and Argentine Patagonia.
