Southern elephant seal birth in Rio Grande do Sul

Overview

A southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) was born on October 7 at Cassino Beach in Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul. This event is noted as extremely rare for the Brazilian coast, representing the first documented birth of the species in the state and only the third recorded in Brazil.

Environmental teams from the National Center for Environmental Education and Monitoring (Nema) and the Marine Animal Recovery Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande (CRAM-FURG) have been monitoring the mother and pup. To prevent human interference during the nursing period, professionals have isolated the area.

As the pup reaches 15 days of age, it has begun transitioning from black fur to silvery-grey tones. During this phase, the pup can gain up to five kilograms per day, while the mother relies on her energy reserves to produce milk. The mother is expected to remain on the beach for approximately one more week before returning to the sea to feed.
