France storms kill 2, leave 53,000 homes without power

From 15 to 17 July 2026 a series of violent thunderstorms swept across France, producing large hail up to 10 cm, wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h and intense lightning. The storms caused two confirmed deaths – a woman in Saint‑Victurnien (Haute‑Vienne) who was struck by a fallen tree and a man in Dolomieu (Isère) who perished in a workshop fire after a lightning strike – and injured several others.

The weather event disrupted electricity supplies for roughly 53 000 households, chiefly in the Auvergne‑Rhône‑Alpes and Nouvelle‑Aquitaine regions, and triggered more than 600 emergency interventions by firefighters, including roof repairs, tree removal and road clearance. Rail services between Lyon and Roanne were halted, and numerous roads were blocked by fallen trees and debris.

Météo‑France recorded an unprecedented electrical activity: about 30 000 lightning strikes in 48 hours and 20 379 cloud‑to‑ground flashes on 16 July, the most lightning‑intense day of the year. Hail damaged vehicles, vineyards and buildings, with losses in the Ardèche vineyards estimated at up to 80 % of the crop. The storms followed a multi‑week heat wave that had already strained the country’s health and emergency services.
