Southern France forest fires force evacuations and draw Czech aid

A major forest fire erupted in the Var department of southern France, driven by extreme heat, low humidity and strong winds – the "three threes" conditions that French firefighters warn increase fire risk. The blaze, which began near Draguignan, quickly spread to the villages of Taradeau and Les Arcs‑sur‑Argens, scorching roughly 180 hectares of forest and vineyards. Over 600 firefighters, five Canadair water‑dropping aircraft, four helicopters and two Dash jets were deployed. Dozens of homes were damaged, one firefighter suffered minor injuries, and about 150 residents were evacuated to community centres.

The fire comes amid a severe fire season in France, where more than 32,000 ha have burned so far in 2026. The French army contributed A400M transport aircraft adapted for firefighting, and the European Union civil‑protection mechanism sent two Czech‑crewed helicopters to assist with the operation.

Authorities have placed the fire under control for the time being, but the situation remains vulnerable to further hot, dry, windy weather.
