Southern France reports new local cases of chikungunya, dengue and West Nile virus
Santé publique France reported a resurgence of mosquito‑borne diseases in the south of France, identifying new autochthonous cases of chikungunya, dengue and West Nile virus. By 3 August the agency recorded five episodes of local transmission: three chikungunya episodes totalling seven cases in the Tarn (Occitanie) and Gironde (Nouvelle‑Aquitaine) departments, and two dengue episodes each with a single case in the Tarn and Hérault.
Two additional autochthonous West Nile virus infections were detected in the Bouches‑du‑Rhône, raising the total of locally acquired West Nile cases to four (one in Pyrénées‑Orientales and three in Bouches‑du‑Rhône). The first locally transmitted chikungunya case in mainland France was announced a week earlier; previously all cases had been imported.
The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is now established in 83 French departments and is active from May to November. Health officials link its spread to climate change, urbanisation and globalisation. The French Ministry of Health has issued an urgent call for heightened vigilance among health professionals regarding these arboviruses.
