Overview

The expansion of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) continues to drive arbovirus risks across France and Switzerland. By mid-August 2026, the species had colonized 83 of the 96 mainland French departments. In Switzerland, authorities in the Haute-Ajoie region have issued a vigilance notice; while the species remains undetected in the Canton of Jura, it is established in all other Swiss cantons except Neuchâtel.

Health surveillance indicates a rise in autochthonous (locally transmitted) infections. In the Occitanie region, eight chikungunya cases were recorded in Saint-Amans-Soult, marking the first detection of the virus in that commune. By mid-August, approximately 20 local chikungunya infections were reported across the Gironde and Tarn regions. Dengue transmission has also been confirmed in the Tarn and Hérault departments. Beyond local transmission, Santé publique France reported significant imported cases since May 1, including 295 cases of dengue and 105 cases of chikungunya.

New concerns have emerged regarding mosquito proliferation linked to urban development and water management. In Le Mans, the Agence régionale de santé (ARS) Sarthe issued an alert following an increase in mosquito bites, noting that construction sites create ‘micro-habitats’—such as signaling cones, buckets, and poorly tensioned tarps—where larvae can mature in as little as seven to ten days.

As of mid-September 2026, experts warn that tiger mosquitoes are expected to remain highly active through autumn. While summer heat and drought previously limited development, recent rainfall has replenished breeding sites like gutters and flowerpot saucers. When rains coincide with mild temperatures (typically above 15-18°C), larvae hatch rapidly, potentially causing a secondary peak in activity. The species remains active until temperatures consistently drop below 12°C, and their resilient eggs can survive for months in dry or cold conditions before hatching.
