France emergency services face strikes, cyberattacks and wildfire threats

French emergency services are facing multiple crises, including labor unrest, cyberattacks, and increasing wildfire threats. Firefighters have announced a six-week strike to demand increased funding, better equipment, and more personnel, arguing that the state must take a larger role in financing civil security as climate change intensifies wildfire risks.

Security services have also been targeted by significant cyberattacks. At least 14 departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS) have been hit, with some hackers claiming responsibility for extracting personal data of tens of thousands of firefighters. This breach includes names, addresses, and professional IDs, raising concerns about identity theft and phishing.

Simultaneously, regional authorities are working to bolster wildfire defenses. In Côte-d’Or, officials are considering inter-departmental aerial capabilities, such as water-bombing helicopters. In the South, the Regional Forest Guard has deployed 250 young agents to monitor forests. In the Var, new strategies are being developed to regenerate areas devastated by recent major fires and to improve forest management and water access.
