Southern Italy experiences separate fire incidents in Marcellinara and Sibari
On June 27, a violent thunderstorm over the Catanzarese area struck a palm tree in Marcellinara with lightning, igniting the tree and prompting its removal for public safety. No injuries were reported.
The previous day, June 26, a large fire broke out in the Sibari district of Cassano allo Jonio, spreading through pine trees and historic palms owned by Ferrovie dello Stato. The blaze generated dense black smoke, raising concerns about the presence of hazardous materials such as discarded electrical cables. Firefighters from Castrovillari, assisted by forest Carabinieri, contained the fire and began investigations into possible illegal waste dumping.
Both incidents prompted local authorities to secure the areas and assess environmental and health risks, but no casualties were recorded.
