Southern Mozambique faces flood risks and road repair emergency
The National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH) has issued a moderate risk alert for urban flooding and erosion in southern Mozambique. The warning covers the cities of Maputo, Matola, Xai-Xai, Inhambane, and Maxixe due to persistent moderate rainfall, with forecasts predicting between 30 to 50 millimeters of rain within 24 hours.
In response to ongoing infrastructure damage caused by earlier floods, Mozambique's Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, announced an emergency allocation of approximately 28.5 million euros (33 million dollars). These funds are intended for urgent road repairs in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane to improve transitability and reinforce road resistance before the next rainy season begins after October.
Work is scheduled to begin in Inhambane as early as next week, with projects in Gaza expected to start in September. The rehabilitation efforts will focus on critical sections, including approximately 50 kilometers of roads in Inhambane and heavily damaged areas such as Incoluane in Maputo province, which suffered significant damage to the N1 National Road earlier this year.
