Mindanao Earthquake Kills Over 45, Displaces Hundreds of Thousands

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani, Mindanao on 8 June 2026. The disaster left at least 46‑47 people dead, 688 injured and 31 missing. More than 346 000 people—over 75 300 households—were affected, with about 12 600 houses damaged and 18 000 residents placed in evacuation centres.

Infrastructure damage was widespread: 45 road sections, eight bridges, one airport and two seaports were disrupted, power was lost in 48 cities and municipalities, and landslides triggered further casualties. The quake damaged 8 642 schools across six regions, halting classes for roughly 4.9 million learners.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice‑President Sara Duterte visited the hardest‑hit areas, and the government declared a state of national calamity to speed relief. International teams from Japan and Australia, as well as WHO medical units, were deployed. The authorities released 500 million pesos in emergency funds and continue rescue, search and recovery operations amid aftershocks.
