France's Landes and Haute‑Garonne hit by record drought, crops and livestock suffer

The Landes Chamber of Agriculture reported that July’s 85% rainfall deficit caused severe losses in summer crops: non‑irrigated corn yields fell 50‑70%, irrigated corn 20‑35%, sunflower 10‑35% and seed crops up to 60% loss. Legumes and vegetables also suffered, with bean losses estimated at 30‑60% and a 90% drop in grass growth, prompting a need for 13 000 t of fodder and 7 700 t of corn for livestock.

In the north, the Pas‑de‑Calais prefecture imposed strict fire‑prevention rules until 15 September, banning campfires, barbecues, fireworks and off‑road vehicles after fire incidents doubled compared with the previous year.

Across France, heatwaves have slowed dairy collection, reducing daily milk output and raising concerns about feed shortages and possible herd decapitalisation. Butter prices fell to around €4 000 per tonne while milk prices slipped to €414 per 1 000 L.

The Haute‑Garonne prefecture created an emergency drought cell, bringing together state services, the chamber of agriculture, professional organisations, the MSA and banks to monitor impacts and coordinate support for farmers.
