Sumba Barat Daya earthquake causes one death and building damage

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the waters of Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday morning, October 4, 2026. While initial reports cited a 6.1 magnitude, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) later updated the parameter to a magnitude 5.9 earthquake at a depth of 30 kilometers.

The tremor was a shallow event caused by a normal fault mechanism associated with the Waikabubak fault. The strongest shaking, reaching VI MMI, was felt in Kodi Balaghar, Kodi Bangedo, and Kodi, causing residents to flee their homes. BMKG confirmed the earthquake posed no tsunami threat.

Casualties and damage include the death of a 73-year-old resident in North Kodi, who reportedly died from shock. One person sustained minor injuries from falling debris. Damage reports vary, with some sources noting 20 affected houses and others reporting up to 56 damaged structures, including one severe and several moderate cases. Damaged facilities include schools, such as SDK Manu Toghi, and religious buildings including Victory Billa Cenge, Jata Ngedo Bila Cenge, and Waitabula Cathedral.

As of Sunday morning, BMKG recorded 62 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 4.3.
