Southwest Sumba earthquake and aftershocks

Overview

On October 4, 2026, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the waters of Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. The tremor, caused by a normal fault mechanism associated with the Waikabubak fault, resulted in one death of a 73-year-old resident due to shock and at least one minor injury. Damage to infrastructure included various houses, schools, and religious buildings such as the Waitabula Cathedral.

Following the initial event, seismic activity continued with a high frequency of aftershocks. By October 6, 2026, a total of 443 aftershocks had been recorded. This ongoing activity has impacted local education, forcing several schools, including SD Negeri Moro Mandoyo and SD Negeri Muramanruyo, to move classes outdoors due to structural cracks and sounds emanating from buildings.
