Soybean markets face volatility amid Argentine hedging trends and Chinese tariff decisions
The soybean market is experiencing significant shifts in both futures and physical trading. In Argentina, an unprecedented trend has emerged where soybean hedging in the futures market is outpacing transactions in the physical market. The Rosario soybean contract for May 2027 has seen open interest reach 1.325 million tons, with prices for the May 2027 position settling around 362.2 USD per ton.
Simultaneously, soybean prices in Rosario have trended lower, influenced by international market pressures. In Chicago, soybean futures fell after China announced tariff reductions on various U.S. agricultural products—including corn, wheat, sorghum, and dairy—but notably excluded U.S. soybeans. Consequently, U.S. soybeans remain subject to a 10% additional tariff, impacting their global competitiveness and prompting position liquidations in Chicago.
