Soybean markets rebound amid Chinese demand and tariff shifts

Soybean markets have seen a rebound driven by technical buying and optimism regarding demand from China. While a 10% import tariff on U.S. beans remains in place, preventing private Chinese companies from purchasing U.S. cargoes, state-owned firms continue to import U.S. products.

However, private Chinese oilseed processors are currently favoring supplies from Brazil and Argentina. These South American beans are often more attractive due to higher oil content and the lack of tariffs, which currently make U.S. soybeans uneconomical for commercial buyers. Many Chinese crushers have already secured shipments from South America through the early months of next year.

In the U.S., the soybean harvest is progressing in line with averages, though corn markets have drifted lower due to technical selling and potential quality issues in the Corn Belt caused by recent flooding. Traders are also monitoring planting activity in South America and upcoming supply updates from the USDA and Brazil’s CONAB.
