South American agriculture faces climate uncertainty for 2026/27 season

Agricultural producers across South America are navigating diverse challenges for the 2026/27 season, primarily driven by El Niño weather patterns. In Brazil, Conab projects a total grain harvest of 366.6 million tons, a 1.4% increase, though Serasa Experian warns that El Niño conditions could reduce soybean production by 17.6 million tons, potentially impacting the Gross Production Value by R$ 33 billion.

In Paraná, Brazil, soybean production is estimated to reach a record 22.75 million tons, a 4% increase, despite concerns that excessive rainfall and low solar radiation may hinder plant development. Conversely, winter crops like wheat face significant declines due to unfavorable weather.

In Argentina, the soybean campaign has begun with 2.3% of the projected 17 million hectares planted. While moisture levels are generally optimal, low soil temperatures and water excesses in certain regions like Entre Ríos are delaying progress. In the 9 de Julio district, excessive soil moisture and poor road conditions have limited wheat sowing.

In Paraguay, the Canindeyú department shows favorable soybean prospects, though experts caution that El Niño does not guarantee record yields due to potential excessive precipitation and reduced solar radiation. In Ecuador, banana exporters report that 35% of the country's 220,000 hectares of banana plantations are highly susceptible to flooding and heavy rains.
