S&P and DBRS reaffirm AAA credit ratings for Netherlands and European Union
S&P Global Ratings has reaffirmed the Netherlands' AAA/A-1+ sovereign credit ratings with a stable outlook. The decision is supported by the country's strong economy, resilient institutions, and healthy external finances. While the Netherlands faces potential economic pressure from elevated natural gas prices and rising energy costs, its diversified economy is expected to absorb external shocks. The government budget deficit is projected to average 2.6% of GDP through 2029, driven by increased public investment in housing, healthcare, and defense to meet NATO commitments.
Separately, DBRS Morningstar has confirmed the European Union's long-term AAA credit rating with a stable outlook. Despite rising debt levels and geopolitical tensions, the agency cited the strong commitment of member states and robust support mechanisms as key factors. EU debt is estimated to approach one trillion euros by 2026, fueled by common financing programs such as Next Generation EU and the SAFE mechanism for defense capabilities. The rating reflects the continued support of major member states like Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.
