S&P Global study highlights challenges in energy transition

A study by S&P Global titled ‘Multidimensional Global Energy Pathways’ suggests that the global energy transition faces significant practical challenges. The report argues against the prevailing narrative of a rapid, simple shift toward renewables and electrification, noting that fossil fuels are projected to provide more than half of the world’s energy through 2060.

The study introduces an ‘Energy Prosperity Indicator’ to help nations balance financial accessibility, energy security, and decarbonization. It concludes that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C is currently unattainable, as existing technology, investment levels, and financial resources make many national carbon neutrality commitments unrealistic. The report urges policymakers to adopt pragmatic, multidimensional solutions rather than rigid or unsustainable commitments.
