Andreas Babler announces phased withdrawal from SPÖ leadership and Vice Chancellorship

Andreas Babler, the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and Vice Chancellor, has announced a phased withdrawal from his leadership roles. This decision follows a period of internal pressure and declining polling numbers, which have recently fallen to approximately 15.5 percent.

Under a newly agreed transition plan, Babler will remain in the government as the Minister for Housing, Culture, Media, and Sport. He intends to step down from his government and party roles by the beginning of 2027. To manage the transition, Philip Kucher and Eva-Maria Holzleitner will take on increased roles as managing party leaders to support Babler until a permanent successor is chosen.

A final decision regarding the permanent leadership of the SPÖ is expected to be made at a party convention in March 2027. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer has been proposed as the successor for the Vice Chancellor position, though the exact timing of this handover remains dependent on his ongoing cancer treatment.
