Space agriculture research advances via SpaceX, NASA, and Embrapa
Space exploration is transitioning from science fiction to a significant scientific and economic reality. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, raised over $85 billion through Nasdaq stock issuance in June 2026 to support Mars colonization efforts. Simultaneously, NASA has allocated a $20 billion budget toward establishing a permanent lunar base by 2032, intended to serve as a logistical stepping stone for Mars missions.
As part of the Artemis Accords, Brazil is participating in space agriculture research. A project led by Embrapa is developing new plant varieties capable of being cultivated on the Moon and Mars. While the primary goal is extraterrestrial food security, these studies are expected to enhance Earth's food security by identifying seeds that can thrive in adverse environments and withstand climate change. The development of this sector also raises important questions regarding space law and intellectual property models.
