International space agriculture research initiatives
Overview
International scientific cooperation has launched into a new phase of space agriculture research. Initially, Brazil, Italy, and Angola established a project through the International Italo-Latin American Organization (IILA) to study plant germination and physiological responses in microgravity. This research, conducted at the University of São Paulo, aims to develop technologies that require fewer resources to combat soil degradation and water scarcity on Earth.
As space exploration efforts expand, including NASA’s lunar base objectives and SpaceX’s Mars colonization funding, the scope of agricultural research has broadened. Under the Artemis Accords, Brazil’s Embrapa is now leading efforts to develop plant varieties specifically for cultivation on the Moon and Mars. While these studies focus on extraterrestrial food security, they continue to aim at enhancing Earth’s resilience to climate change, while simultaneously raising new questions regarding space law and intellectual property.
