SpaceX launches multiple satellite missions for defense, IoT, and Earth observation

On October 1, 2026, several satellite missions were successfully launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base via SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission, marking significant progress in Earth observation, defense, and telecommunications.

The IRIDE program, an Italian national infrastructure project supported by the European Space Agency (ESA), completed its Eaglet II constellation deployment. This launch added eight Eaglet II modules, bringing the total fleet to 39 satellites. These minisatellites utilize optical sensors and AIS receivers for environmental monitoring, maritime traffic tracking, and coastal protection.

In the defense sector, a strategic partnership between Rheinmetall and Argotec successfully placed its first reconnaissance satellite into orbit. Unlike traditional mapping satellites, this system focuses on airspace surveillance and early warning. It uses artificial intelligence to process sensor data, identifying ground indicators of emerging aerial threats to integrate with national air defense networks.

Additionally, the Spanish company Sateliot launched five satellites for its Draconis mission to expand its Internet of Things (IoT) network. These satellites act as orbital telecommunications towers using 5G NTN technology to provide coverage in remote areas. Finally, the ATHENE-1 satellite, featuring German technology, was launched to serve as a research platform for satellite communication, navigation, and AI-driven data processing.
