Spain accounts for over half of counterfeit goods seized at EU borders

Spain intercepted approximately 990.4 million euros worth of counterfeit goods at its borders in 2025, representing 50.73% of the total value seized across the European Union. According to reports from the EUIPO and the European Commission, Spanish authorities seized 644,255 counterfeit items.

While watches represent only 37.24% of the quantity of items seized, they account for 88.8% of the total value intercepted in Spain. Other significant categories include handbags and wallets (17.44% of items), beverages (11.35%), and clothing (8.17%).

Experts warn that counterfeit markets are diversifying beyond luxury fashion into sensitive sectors such as food, beverages, toys, cosmetics, electronics, and automotive parts. Beyond economic losses for legitimate brands, these illicit goods pose significant risks to consumer health and safety, as they often bypass European regulatory standards and lack legal guarantees or traceability.
