Spain advances regional floodplain parks and irrigation modernization projects

The Valencian regional government (Consell) and the Valencian Farmers Association (AVA‑ASAJA) have created a joint working group to incorporate agricultural land into planned metropolitan floodplain parks along the Turia river and nearby ravines. The parks will cover about 1,500 hectares, feature over 72 km of trails, and aim to boost flood resilience, climate regulation and public health through nature‑based solutions.

In Castilla‑La Mancha, the regional authority announced a new €18 million call for aid to modernise irrigation systems, building on a €34.5 million programme that funded 68 projects last year. The initiative highlights the use of reclaimed water from the Hellín wastewater treatment plant, advanced digital controls and creates direct employment for around 1,100 workers. Both programmes form part of broader regional strategies to enhance agricultural competitiveness, water sustainability and rural development.
