Spain Advances Segura Sewer Collector and Montesa Flood‑Control Dam Projects

The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) has completed the design phase for a new collector serving the Peña de las Águilas and Llano de San José areas of Elche. The project, costing €2.5 million, will link the municipal sewer network to the basin’s main system, with a further €1.8 million required for the final municipal connection. The tender is expected at the end of 2026 or early 2027, and the work will be financed entirely with CHS own funds, according to statements from the mayor and basin officials.

In the Júcar river basin, the Montesa‑Vallada dam is being prepared as part of the regional flood‑defence plan. Planned to be 56 m high with a 35 hm³ capacity, the structure will operate without permanent water storage and will include a lower ecological passage to allow continuous flow for fish and terrestrial wildlife. The passage will remain open under normal conditions and close only during flood events. The project was presented at the XIV Spanish Dams Conference, though environmental groups have raised concerns about its impact on the surrounding landscape.
