Spain advances water infrastructure projects in Andalusia

The state water authority ACUAES awarded a contract worth €8.6 million to Catalan company ACSA Obras for the construction of a new wastewater‑treatment plant in Mazagón, Huelva. The facility will increase treatment capacity to 3,569 m³ per day, serving an equivalent population of 19,632 residents and is slated for completion within 22 months, including six months for commissioning. A separate technical‑assistance contract of €356,950 covers supervision, safety coordination and environmental monitoring. The plant is expected to improve the quality of marine effluents by reducing organic load and bacterial concentrations.

In the Bajo Almanzora basin, the desalination plant at Villaricos has been delayed further. After the 2012 flood rendered the plant inoperative, repair works begun in 2025 have been extended, with the execution period now lengthened by 72 months to a new target of March 2028. The project cost has risen from €18.2 million to €19.5 million, partly due to the replacement of SF₆‑filled electrical cabinets with greener alternatives. Government sub‑delegate José María Martín indicated that full operational capacity, delivering 15 hm³ of desalinated water per day, is expected by June 2029.
