Spain agricultural losses exceed 441 million euros due to extreme weather

Extreme weather events in Spain, including floods, hail, droughts, and wildfires, have resulted in over 441 million euros in agricultural insurance indemnities this year. According to data from Agroseguro, approximately 1.28 million hectares of insured land have been affected by these phenomena as of late August.

August has been identified as the most severe month for agricultural insurance claims in history. During this month alone, hail and hailstorms damaged 54,600 hectares of crops, leading to estimated indemnities of approximately 50 million euros. The damage has primarily impacted summer woody and herbaceous crops, such as vineyards, almond trees, citrus, corn, and sunflowers.

Regional impacts vary significantly. In Navarra and La Rioja, storms have heavily affected extensive herbaceous crops, grapes, and vegetables. In the Valencian Community, thermal gusts and hail caused notable damage to persimmon and citrus crops, particularly in the Ribera del Júcar region. Murcia has also seen significant damage to almond trees, while wildfires have affected over 16,000 hectares of land.
