Spain allocates €18 million to boost women's health research

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain will triple public investment in research on women's health, raising funding to €18 million. The money will support the "Somos. Contamos: end discrimination of women in health research" programme, which will finance projects on chronic pain, autoimmune and thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease, mental health and other conditions that have been under‑studied, such as menopause and endometriosis – a disease that affects one in seven women and can take years to diagnose.

The programme will be implemented through three main channels: research projects funded by the Centre for the Development of Technology and Innovation (CDTI), collaborative studies supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), and pre‑doctoral contracts aimed at strengthening the critical mass of researchers in women’s health. Health Minister Diana Morant highlighted the need to eradicate gender bias in biomedical research and praised Spain’s public university and health system as the basis for the initiative.

The announcement was made at the Fundación Ortega‑Marañón, a historic institution for women's education in Spain.
