Spain allocates 612 million euros to renewable energy repowering projects

Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has awarded 612 million euros to 173 projects under the Repoten 2 program. Funded by NextGenEU resources from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the initiative focuses on the repowering of wind and hydroelectric facilities.

The projects include 81 wind repowering actions and 92 technological and environmental modernizations of hydroelectric plants. Collectively, these efforts will add 2,433 MW of wind power and 1,091 MW of hydroelectric power, totaling more than 3.5 GW of associated generation. The program is expected to mobilize approximately 3.75 billion euros in total investment.

A significant feature of this phase is the integration of hybrid storage, with more than half of the projects expected to add 2 GWh of new storage capacity to the national grid. The modernization involves replacing approximately 3,000 old wind turbines (averaging 790 kW) with fewer than 500 high-capacity units (averaging 5 MW).

Galicia leads the distribution with 40 projects, followed by Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, and Aragon. All works must be completed by June 30, 2030, with a possible extension to the end of that year.
