Spain allocates €719 million for AI gigafactory project
The Spanish government has approved a €719 million investment for a national artificial‑intelligence gigafactory. The funding will be provided by the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Public Administration through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT) and will support a public‑private consortium that will submit a bid to the EU InvestAI programme.
The proposed multisite facility will be located in Móra la Nova (Tarragona) and San Fernando de Henares (Madrid). It aims to create a high‑performance computing centre capable of hosting hundreds of thousands of GPUs, giving Spanish researchers, companies and public bodies access to the compute power needed to train advanced AI models. The project is part of a broader EU effort to build sovereign AI infrastructure and reduce dependence on US and Chinese providers, with a total estimated value of up to €4 billion and participation from firms such as Telefónica, ACS, Santander and others.
