Italy and Spain lift reciprocal border controls

Italy and Spain have agreed to end reciprocal border controls at airports and seaports, restoring free movement within the Schengen Area. The decision follows a telephone conversation between Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

The agreement was facilitated by a recent meeting between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on the sidelines of a European Council meeting in Brussels. The measures, which had been in place since early August, were originally triggered by a mass migration event in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where over 70,000 migrants entered from Morocco in late July.

While the physical border checks are being lifted, both nations committed to enhancing the exchange of intelligence and police information to maintain security within the common European space.
