Spain annuls death sentence of last Franco-era execution victim
The Spanish Government has officially declared the death sentence of Xosé Humberto Baena Alonso null, fifty years after his execution. Baena Alonso, a young anti-fascist activist from Vigo, was the last person executed by the Franco dictatorship on September 27, 1975.
His family has long maintained that the judicial process was a sham. Baena Alonso was arrested in Madrid on July 14, 1975, under accusations of killing a police officer. However, his sister, Flor Baena, asserts the accusation was physically impossible, noting he was near the Portuguese border the day before the incident.
The political involvement of Baena Alonso intensified after a police shooting of a worker during a May 1, 1975, demonstration in Vigo. Following a public tribute to the deceased worker, Baena Alonso was placed on police watch lists, eventually leading to his arrest and execution.
