Spain approves €2.2 billion in loans for Navantia defense programs

The Spanish government has approved €2,196 million in loans for the state-owned naval company Navantia to finance three Special Modernization Programs (PEM) and develop strategic naval capabilities.

The largest allocation, totaling €1,786 million, is dedicated to the European Patrol Corvette (EPC) program managed by OCCAR. This initiative involves the construction of six next-generation corvettes and includes industrial cooperation with Fincantieri to develop modular, multipurpose vessels.

Additional funding includes €210 million for the technological modernization of Segura-class minehunters and €200 million for the modernization and maintenance of various surface and submarine units, including the S-80 class submarines. The loans will be granted at 0% interest between 2026 and 2031, contingent upon the achievement of milestones certified by the Ministry of Defense.
