Spanish government funding for Navantia naval programs
Overview
The Spanish government has approved a financing package totaling approximately €2.2 billion for the state-owned naval company Navantia. The funds, provided through 0% interest loans to be distributed between 2026 and 2031, are intended to support three Special Modernization Programs for the Spanish Navy.
The largest portion of the funding, €1.786 billion, is dedicated to the European Patrol Corvette (EPC) program managed by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). This initiative involves the construction of six next-generation corvettes and includes industrial cooperation with Fincantieri.
Remaining funds include €210 million for the technological modernization of Segura-class minehunters and €200 million for the modernization and maintenance of various surface and submarine units, including S-80 class submarines. While the EPC program is managed via OCCAR, the other two programs are managed directly by the Ministry of Defense.
