Spain approves €300 million for EuroHPC AI gigafactory bid

Spain's Council of Ministers authorized a voluntary contribution of €300 million to the European High‑Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC). The funding is intended to meet the eligibility requirement for Spain to compete for one of the European Union's first AI gigafactories and to support participation in EU quantum‑technology initiatives.

The contribution follows a recent decision allowing the Spanish Tech Transformation Society (SETT) to join a public‑private consortium investing roughly €720 million to bid for a gigafactory, a project that could mobilise up to €5 billion. Spain already hosts two EuroHPC AI factories at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the Galicia Supercomputing Centre, as well as the MareNostrum 5 quantum supercomputer, which are used for advanced research in genomics, drug design, and digital twins.

The investment aims to strengthen Spain's role in the European AI and supercomputing ecosystem, boost capacity in universities, SMEs and research institutions, and reduce reliance on non‑European technology providers.
