Algeciras Port’s South Access Road Opens, Completing Major Highway Upgrade

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Mobility Sustainable has opened the practical entirety of the new South Access to the Puerto Bahía de Algeciras. The 8.2‑kilometre stretch, which duplicates the N‑340 and connects it to the A‑7 and also duplicates the N‑350 to kilometre 1.2, was built at a cost of €43.34 million and financed with NextGenerationEU recovery funds. The opening, announced in late July 2026, precedes the peak‑travel period of early August and follows a 13‑month delay caused by winter storms and other setbacks. About 600 metres of the N‑350 duplication, the Varadero structure and several roundabouts remain to be completed in the coming months, along with acoustic and landscape integration works.

In parallel, the ministry awarded a €17.3 million contract to improve the north‑side access to the port. The contract covers the duplication of the A‑7/N‑357 corridor, the construction of a new two‑lane depressed carriageway, relocation of local roads, new roundabouts and the installation of acoustic screens to reduce noise. Both projects aim to markedly increase capacity and safety for long‑distance and freight traffic serving the strategic Algeciras port.
