Spain approves new European investment account with tax benefits
The Spanish Government has approved the ‘Cuenta de Ahorro e Inversión Financia Europa’ (Finance Europe Savings and Investment Account) as part of Royal Decree-Law 26/2026. This new financial instrument allows individuals to invest up to 150,000 euros in European assets with significant tax advantages.
To qualify, funds must invest at least 70% of their portfolio in assets within the European Economic Area, including listed European stocks, funds, and ETFs. The account is individual, non-transferable, and limited to one per taxpayer. Contributions must be made in cash, and the account includes an operational sub-account capped at 1,500 euros for cash holdings; any excess must be invested or withdrawn within three months.
Tax benefits increase based on the duration of the investment. If capital remains in the account for more than five years, the first 10,000 euros of capital gains are 100% exempt from Personal Income Tax (IRPF). For gains exceeding this amount, 20% of the excess is excluded from the tax base. The decree also expands the Sialp savings plans.
