Spain approves new European Investment Savings Account

The Spanish government has approved the ‘Cuenta de Ahorro e Inversión Financia Europa’ (European Investment Savings Account), a new financial vehicle designed to encourage long-term investment in European companies among small savers.

Under the new regulations, individuals can contribute up to 150,000 euros into a single, non-transferable account. To qualify for tax benefits, at least 70% of the portfolio must be invested in assets linked to the European Economic Area, with a minimum of 50% in equities and 35% specifically in European equities.

The account offers significant tax advantages: investors can buy and sell assets within the account without triggering IRPF (Personal Income Tax) as long as the funds remain invested for at least five years. Upon withdrawal, the first 10,000 euros of capital gains are tax-free, and there is a 20% tax exemption on subsequent gains. The account is limited to a maximum liquidity of 1,500 euros.
