Spain aviation sector faces safety debates and rising emissions concerns

Spain's aviation sector is facing scrutiny regarding both operational safety and environmental impact. On September 22, Madrid will host the third edition of the Spanish Aeronautical Operational Safety Congress. The event, co-organized by several aviation associations and legal entities, aims to analyze the relationship between operational safety and accident prevention through technical exchanges between regulators, investigators, and operators.

Simultaneously, a study by Transport & Environment (T&E) indicates that aviation emissions in Spain are growing faster than in any other major European country. The report warns that expansion plans for twelve major airports managed by AENA, including Madrid, Barcelona, Palma, and Málaga, will exacerbate this trend. T&E estimates that expansions at these four airports alone could generate 35 million additional tons of CO2, with the Madrid-Barajas expansion specifically projected to contribute 23 million tons over 25 years.

The organization argues that increasing traffic volume through new runways and terminals offsets the benefits of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and improved engine efficiency, stating that technological improvements alone cannot close the carbon gap.
