Spanish aviation sector operational and environmental trends

Spain’s aviation sector has faced a period of high passenger volume accompanied by operational and environmental challenges.

During the summer of 2026, Aena reported significant growth, with August passenger numbers reaching over 34.8 million. This surge led to substantial operational difficulties, as approximately 26.6% of flights experienced delays or cancellations, causing an estimated economic impact of 502.3 million euros for travelers. Overbooking also emerged as a major issue, with Air Europa, easyJet, Brussels Airlines, and Etihad Airways frequently cited in passenger claims.

Following these operational hurdles, the industry has turned toward safety and sustainability discussions. The Spanish Aeronautical Operational Safety Congress was scheduled for late September in Madrid to address accident prevention and technical regulation. Concurrently, concerns have been raised regarding the environmental impact of the sector. A study by Transport & Environment (T&E) noted that aviation emissions in Spain are growing faster than in other major European nations. The report highlighted that expansion plans for twelve Aena-managed airports, including Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat, could significantly increase CO2 emissions, potentially offsetting the benefits of technological improvements and sustainable aviation fuels.
