Spain awards top researchers Ángel Carracedo and Jorge Calvo Zaragoza

Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities presented the 2026 National Research Awards, granting ten senior prizes and ten youth prizes, each accompanied by €30,000. The senior awards recognized established scientists for career‑long contributions, while the youth awards highlighted emerging leaders.

Ángel Carracedo Álvarez, group leader at the CIBER of Rare Diseases and coordinator of IMPaCT Genomics, received the Gregorio Marañón National Research Award for Medicine and Health Sciences, praised for his work in forensic medicine and genomic diagnostics. Jesús Martínez de la Fuente, head of a CIBER‑BBN group and researcher at the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon, was honoured with the Juan de la Cierva National Research Award for Knowledge Transfer, reflecting his innovations in nanobiotechnology.

Jorge Calvo Zaragoza, professor at the University of Alicante, earned the María Andresa Casamayor Youth Research Award in Mathematics and ICT, recognizing his pioneering contributions to optical music recognition and his role in building a leading international research team.
