Spain blocks multiple renewable energy projects amid legal disputes

In Galicia, a group of wind farms totalling about 182 MW, including the 39.6 MW Xesteirón park now owned by Engie after its purchase from Greenalia, have been placed under precautionary suspension by the Galician High Court (TSXG). Environmental NGO ADEGA succeeded in showing the presence of highly sensitive species, prompting the court to deem the construction a risk of irreparable damage. ADEGA is now asking the regional government to declare the sites of public utility so it can acquire or expropriate the land.

Meanwhile, the Basque Government has rejected the pending authorisation requests for 19 solar photovoltaic projects proposed by Solaria Eguzki Sorkuntza, covering roughly 920 MW. The denial was based on the expiry of access and grid‑connection permits previously granted by Red Eléctrica de España. Officials stated that “both the administrative and litigation procedures do not suspend the effect of the expiry of the access and connection permits,” and the projects were archived pending a possible appeal.
